Techno-economic analysis of bulk-scale compressed air energy storage in power system decarbonisation

Abstract Although the penetration of renewable energy in power systems has been substantially increased globally last decade, fossil fuels are still important providing essential flexibility required to reliably maintain system balance. In 2019, more than one quarter generation Europe and over 40% UK’s electricity was from (mainly gas). For achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emission target around middle this century, these have be decarbonised coming decades. Bulk-scale storage recognised as a key technology overcome reduced dispatchability associated with decrease generation. Taking UK case study, paper presents an assessment geological resources for bulk-scale compressed air (CAES), optimal planning framework CAES combination solar wind replace system. The analysis reveals up 725 GWh ready-to-use capacity by utilising existing underground salt caverns UK. These potential sites added equal 2018 can reduce carbon emissions 84% cost increase 29%, compared 2018. results indicate plausibly achievable cost-effectiveness decarbonisation countries available.
